VICTORIAN detectives have warned community members to beware of a fraudulent website offering not-so-sizzling deals on barbecues.
Investigators believe customers are logging on to the website www.barbecueing.au with the intent of purchasing goods including Weber barbecues.
The websites www.suzukioutboarding.com.au – which is not associated to Suzuki Marine – and www.acbestbuy.com.au are also believed to be connected to fraudulent activity.
Customers are asked to make a payment via direct bank transfer but the goods are never delivered.
The scam is believed to be happening Australia-wide, with more than 100 reports across Victoria alone.
All of the websites have since been shut down.
Darebin detective Senior Constable Samantha Petch said it was disappointing to see everyday Australians targeted by those operating beneath the law.
“Unfortunately the issue is not just restricted to Victoria and we are seeing hundreds of dollars fraudulently taken,” she said.
“More and more people are turning to online shopping in today’s day and age and we encourage them to be mindful of the websites they visit.”
Police believe the scammers may be operating from an overseas location and are warning consumers to be vigilant when purchasing goods online.
