Baseball: Tigers topple ladder leader

Tigers 9 d South 1

IN the sixth time the two teams had met on the diamond this season, Tigers showed their dominance with their fourth win over ladder-leader South in the Mount Gambier and District Baseball League Division 1 competition.

Brodie Foster started on the mound for Tigers, making short work of South’s first two batters, before Ben Nash got on base with a walk.

Bruce Morale was next up getting on base from an error by Tigers third baseman Brandon Telford, which advanced Nash as well.

Both Morale and Nash then stole bases putting the pressure on and causing Tigers’ catcher Jesse Foster to throw wild, allowing Nash to come home for South’s only run for the game.

With Ryan Placucci starting on the mound for South, Tigers first run came in the second innings from Brodie Foster.

South went out to bat again with Steven Isaccson getting to first on an error, but he was caught stealing and sent back to the dugout.

Strikes out for South again saw no runs on the board.

Alex Harkness hit a deep double to left-field in the third for Tigers’ first safe hit, which was followed by a single from Brayden Morton, putting South’s Ryan Walter under pressure where he fumbled allowing Harkness to take advantage and cross the plate.

South’s first safe hit came in the fourth from coach Bruce Morale, as he slammed a double to left, but was unable to convert the runs.

Foster was on point on the mound, taking seven strike-outs in his innings.

In an attempt to pull Tigers back, Bruce Morale replaced Placucci on the mound for South, but Tigers were on a mission and scored two runs off hits by Karl Ransom and Dyllan Lane, giving them four before Morale settled to strike out Sims, Foster and Ransom.

Tigers fifth run came after Brodie Foster got to first on a muffed fly at right-field, before advancing home on another double from Lane.

In the top of the seventh Tigers replaced Foster on the mound with Tyler Horrigan, who pitched the final two innings.

The bottom of the seventh saw Tigers score again when Jesse Foster hit safe and was eventually batted home by Kirby Hillyer.

Nash took over from South’s Morale and then was replaced by Jesse Balshaw, who only lasted several batters before Nash pitched out the game, but it was too late and Tigers scored their last three runs to seal the game.

Federal 4 d Central 1

THE last game of the day saw Federal with a win over Central, securing itself a place in finals.

This match-up never fails to impress when Central’s Dylan Chuck and Federal’a Alex Reppin face off on the mound.

Both pitchers were in fine form, with Reppin taking 16 strikeouts and Chuck 14.

Federal’s Kane McMillan was first up for the night and was able to get on base on a walk.

Central hit the board first when Ethan Chuck singled to right-field and advanced on a fielding error, before making it home on Dylan Chucks’ double to right.

Federal’s first runs came in the fifth inning where a sacrifice bunt saw two runners make it home.

Reppin scored Federals third after hitting to right field advancing on a wild throw, before making it home on another wild throw.

Federal’s fourth and final run came in the eighth inning.

Central continued to get hits and scored 11 for the game but was unable to convert into runs, leaving 12 runners on base for the game.
