THE State Labor Government has promised $9.6m to enhance road safety education in primary schools and improve road safety around schools if re-elected.
A commitment of $8m over four years will deliver road safety improvements surrounding schools in response to community needs.
The fund will allow schools and local communities to put forward infrastructure and improvements such as “kiss and drop” zones or pedestrian crossings to boost road safety around schools.
Schools and community members will be able to nominate infrastructure improvements surrounding their schools.
Labor committed an additional $400,000 each year to extend the RAA Street Smart Primary Road Safety Education Program to all government and non-government schools in the state.
Road Safety Minister Chris Picton said keeping children safe on or near roads was a critical priority for the Labor Party.
“This funding will enable schools and communities to nominate areas around schools which they believe could be made safer with road infrastructure improvements,” he said.
“It will enable all primary schools to offer important road safety education to students from reception to year seven through the street smart primary program.
“Labor believes education plays a key role in improving road safety, alongside investment in infrastructure and strong enforcement.”
