Motorsport: Sprintcar drives venture across Bass Strait

MOUNT Gambier sprintcar drivers Steven Lines and Glen Sutherland headed across Bass Strait on the weekend to contest the first two nights of the World Series Sprintcars “Devil Swing” at Tasmania’s Latrobe Speedway.

Lines faired the better of the two, with two fourth place finishes, while Sutherland managed a seventh place Friday night, followed by a 12th place Saturday night.

Darren Mollenoyux claimed the win Friday night, after starting out of pole position for the A Main feature.

Sutherland was in contention for a podium until late in the race, while Lines ran a consistent feature to come home fourth behind Mollenoyus, James McFadden and Lachlan McHugh.

Saturday night saw fortunes change, with Jamie Veal back at the pointy end.

Once again Lines was consistent, with another fourth, just behind behind Mollenoyux and Brad Keller.

Lines is not a contracted driver in the series and has missed one round so far, but still holds down overall eighth place.

Sutherland is in his first contracted year and is currently sitting in 10th place.

The three in-form drivers in the country at the moment – McFadden, Veal and Kerry Madsen – hold down the top three positions respectively, with Carson Macedo, Keller, Mollenoyux, Dave Murcott and McHugh filling in the holes in the top 10.

The WSS heads back to Tasmania this weekend for the final night of the Devil Swing.
