A DOG was left in a car at a Mount Gambier shopping centre on Sunday as the temperature peaked at 37 degrees.
Limestone Coast superintendent Grant Moyle said police were notified and attended the location immediately.
“Police received advice a distressed dog had been left in a car – a patrol attended the location, but the vehicle had already left, so they followed it up to the owner’s registered address,” Supt Moyle said.
“When police arrived the dog was fine, however officers gave the owner some advice about appropriate care.”
Supt Moyle said the incident served as a reminder to all residents that animals quickly become distressed when left in a car.
“Cars heat up to extreme temperatures regardless of the outside temperature – even on cooler days it can get extremely hot in a car,” he said.
“If members of the public see a distressed animal in a car, we urge them to notify police.”
