Red Cross service helps people through heatwave

COMMUNITIES and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison is urging vulnerable South Australian’s or their families to register with the Red Cross Telecross REDi service ahead of this week’s forecast of extreme hot weather.

During extreme heat events trained Telecross REDi service volunteers phone registered clients up to three times a day to check on their wellbeing and activate an emergency response if required.

Older people, people with a disability, those experiencing mental illness, people recovering from an illness or accident, or anyone with an ongoing illness or health condition can be particularly at risk during very hot weather.

Ms Bettison said the importance of Telecross REDi service has been demonstrated in the last week with many people requiring additional support to stay well and healthy in the heat.

“I strongly urge people in the community who think they might need support during extreme heat conditions, like those forecast for this long weekend, to register their details with Telecross REDi as soon as possible,” she said.

“It’s also a good idea for people to consider any relatives or friends who fit into this group, and ask them whether they need assistance to register.”

Call 1800 188 071 or email telecrossredi@redcross.org.au to register.
