First ever surf patrols at Rivoli Bay

THE last weekend of the year and first day of 2018 were marked by the first ever foot and surf patrols of the northern shores of Rivoli Bay by the Beachport Surf Life Saving Club.

ON PATROL: Beach and surf patrols at Beachport are now held at peak tourist times.

Patrols of the front beaches and the surf beach passed without incident and were the culmination of a momentous December for the club.

During this time it took delivery of its first inflatable rescue boat, vehicle and trailer, secured sponsorships from local businesses and conducted a training session attended by 45 juniors (nippers) and 16 youths.

Further training sessions will be scheduled over summer and beach patrols are expected to continue for the four weekends in January as well as the January 26 public holiday for Australia Day.

Patrols will also be provided for the annual duck race on Saturday afternoon at the Pool of Siloam.

Beachport Surf Life Saving Club spokesperson Julie Moran said pre-Christmas training session involved common skill-based testing to ensure safety during the rest of the season.

Ms Moran said beach and grassed games were hosted during the training session as an “ice-breaker” for participants.

“Many of the kids had never met each other and it was great to see new friendships being made,” she said.

Ms Moran said the first patrols over the New Year’s weekend turned out to be the coolest days of the week.

“The feedback from members of the public was sensational and we look forward to the summer ahead,” she said.

“The club would like to personally thank everyone involved who has supported us along the way.

“However, no matter how much support you have you still need enthusiastic, talented and motivated people to bring it all together.

“To all past and present committee members you have had a significant impact on our club’s success and if I were any of you, I would be extremely proud of what you have achieved.

“You have provided to the community a great service with the sporting facility and social engagement program that has already made a huge difference.

“Surf life saving is a fantastic sport that is multi-generational and that all members of the family can participate in at the same time.

“This ranges from five year olds to those over 50.

“It truly is a unique sport that encompasses the whole community and we cannot wait for the rest of the season.”
