Club doors to stay open

THE doors of the Millicent and District Community Club will remain open despite the resignation of its two most senior staff.

This commitment has been given by Matt Hann, who has chaired its management committee since 2011.

“There are rumours around Millicent, but we have no intention to shut.” Mr Hann said.

Club manager Sandy Walshaw and head chef Linda Flood have recently submitted their resignations and they both take effect on January 12.

Another kitchen employee has already left the Davenport Street premises and is understood to be looking to take over a business in central Millicent.

Ms Walshaw has been in the role for the past four years and told The South Eastern Times that she needed a rest from the demanding managerial role.

Mr Hann said the management committee was taking steps to appoint replacements for Ms Walshaw and Ms Flood.

He said The Club was having regular discussions with Wattle Range Council and was meeting all of its financial commitments to the body.

The Community Club secured a long-term loan from the then Millicent District Council in the 1990s and has been striving to repay it ever since.

Matters relating to the required Community Club financial reports to council were raised by Councillor Glenn Brown at last month’s meeting.

Council chief executive Ben Gower told The South Eastern Times yesterday the required documents were received by council a few weeks ago.

Founded in 1964, the Community Club is a not-for-profit organisation which has a staff of 14 full-time and part-time staff.
