New local laws adopted

GLENELG Shire Council has adopted a renewed set of local laws after a period of consultation.

Adopting the Proposed General Local Law 2018 at the December ordinary council meeting, councillors endorsed the document in its entirety which also includes the footpath and itinerant trading policies.

The general local law protects the amenity and environment, control and keeping of animals, activities on roads and council land, protection of council assets and control of building sites.

Mayor Anita Rank said the amendments were reflective of community views following extensive consultation.

“As part of the proposed local law, cat owners will note that during 7pm and 7am their cats will be confined to their property to help ensure the safety of our neighbourhoods,” she said.

“We are also considering options of how to make our public spaces more enjoyable for all pet owners.

“There have been a number of concerns raised on the levels of safety at this popular recreation area and in order to ensure the park remains welcoming for all residents, we will explore the option to ban dogs visiting the area.

“But we will ensure that all pet owners have opportunities to access public spaces – as part of our Domestic Animal

Management Plan 2017-2021, which was endorsed by council in October, we will scope possible locations for dog off leash parks within the shire.”

Ms Rank also thanked the many community members who provided feedback during the comprehensive consultation process.

“This document has been developed by the community for the community and helps to ensure the shire maintains its status as one of the most liveable regional municipalities,” she said.
