A NEW resource highlighting the educational possibilities of outdoor learning environments for children and young people has been launched.
Learning Outdoors – Risks and Benefits will act as a guide on how educators can positively transform their spaces and follows a number of case studies across South Australia that show the successes that have been achieved.
At the heart of the guide is understanding how the risks and challenges that come with outdoor learning environments can be used to optimise learning opportunities through diverse and meaningful experiences.
With features such as a sandpit, loose parts, fire pit, pizza oven, chooks, mud, water, garden beds and diverse landscape, outdoor areas offer an array of learning possibilities that encourage children to challenge themselves and take risks.
Department spokesperson Ann-Marie Hayes said there has been an enormous amount of positive feedback from children, their families and site staff around the way preschools and schools are looking at learning through play in environments that spark curiosity and build confidence in all learners.
