Holiday no good for Saints

NO GAME: The unwillingness of MSEFL clubs to compete on Good Friday has disappointed Robe Football Club vice president Roger Sweetman.

A MID South East Football League club has shunned a $3000 cash incentive to play a Good Friday match at Robe in 2018.

The offer was made to the Nangwarry Football Club as it is scheduled to play the Robe Roosters in the opening round.

If the seasiders proposal was accepted, the two teams would have met on March 30 (Good Friday) rather than April.

However, Nangwarry Football Club secretary Kevin Dinnison said there was no support from the Saints as other holiday arrangements were in place.

“Our players would not commit to playing on Good Friday,” Dinnison said.

Robe Football Club vice president Roger Sweetman said he was disappointed by the decision.

“We have the full support of the South Australia Community Football League but we cannot find a team to play against,” Sweetman.

“We thought the timing of the match would have been good as it was just before the first round,

“A Good Friday match would have showcased our league and the sponsors to a wider group who are hear for the Easter holidays.

“We had tried to arrange the Good Friday match ahead of the MSEFL annual general meeting (in mid-November) when the 2018 program was set.”

The Roosters and Mount Burr Mozzies made history in 2015 when their footballers and netballers competed on Good Friday.

It was the first time this sacred date had staged such matches and they attracted an estimated crowd of 1800.

The seasiders have since offered cash incentives to the eight other MSEFL club to play on Good Friday but none have accepted.

The MSEFL annual general meeting was held at the Millicent RSL Hall on November 21.

Peter Mitchell continues as MSEFL president with all other office-holders on the senior executive remaining in place.
