Woman spared jail for vehicle assault

A MOUNT Gambier woman who drove her car at her partner in a “menacing manner” was given a suspended sentence in court on Wednesday.

Naomi Gae Manterfield, 41, appeared in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court to be sentenced for one charge of aggravated assault by use of an offensive weapon.

The prosecution said the defendant was with her domestic partner at home when they became involved in an argument.

The victim left the property before the defendant reversed her vehicle out of the driveway and followed him.

Manterfield sped up the road and directed her car at the victim.

Magistrate Teresa Anderson said she would not be sentencing the defendant on the basis that she struck the victim, but accepted she was very close.

“You went back to your driveway following the incident and became very abusive towards people who were watching,” Magistrate Anderson said.

The defendant’s lawyer said her client had been struck by the victim before the incident took place.

It was also revealed that both the defendant and the victim were affected by methamphetamines at the time of the incident.

“Drugs has been a problem for you,” Magistrate Anderson said.

“You understand that it is something you need to work on.”

Manterfield was sentenced to seven months and nine days imprisonment, which was suspended on her entering a two year good behaviour bond.

She will be supervised for one year of the good behaviour bond, however Magistrate Anderson did not require her to be drug tested as she said it would be “setting her up for failure”.

Magistrate Anderson cited the defendant’s limited history as good reason to suspend the sentence.

Manterfield will also be required to pay court costs.
