Political hopefuls face off

A MOTION for a “good old fashioned town hall debate” between MacKillop candidates in Millicent has been carried at Wattle Range Council’s recent monthly meeting.

Proposed by Wattle Range Mayor Peter Gandolfi, the debate has been scheduled for February 18 and will be open to the public.

“People miss these old fashioned debates and it would afford them the opportunity to come and listen to the up to seven candidates we should have for McKillop,” Mr Gandolfi told councillors.

“The suggested format is five minutes per candidate to tell us why they should be voted for, followed by questions from the public.

“An adjudicator would be present to manage the debate.”

During the same meeting council adopted a draft “Ask of Government” document to be presented to all parties involved in next year’s South Australian state elections.

Mr Gandolfi said through the document council will engage with State Government, the Opposition and minor parties on programs, projects and ideas that will improve the economic, social and environmental outlook of the shared constituency.

“Council has in recent times benefited from opportunities and I am certainly buoyant about future prospects,” he said.

“Economic development and job creation have been recognised as the highest priority by the community and will continue to be a strong focus.

“Council is seeking a commitment for all parties prior to the March 2018 election to address matters raised in this document.”

Priority issues listed in the document relate to transport, drainage, the coastline and lakes, economic development, financial implications on local government, human services and facilities, government planning and decision making and environmental sustainability.
