THE Mount Gambier Christian Centre’s annual old time music night will this year raise funds for a church mission in Vanuatu.
Following a devastating volcano eruption last month, 11,000 residents were evacuated from Ambae Island to neighbouring islands as volcanic ash rained down on their homes.
Neville Telford has travelled to Ambae on 12 occasions to complete work with the mission and hopes attendees at this year’s concert will give generously.
“Ambae Island is right at the foot of the volcano,” Mr Telford said.
“I go to Ambae every year, I’ve been 12 times now and I just climbed that very volcano only three weeks before it erupted.
“The Ambae locals have been evacuated and all their houses and water tanks are being covered by ash and they are in need of help now more than ever.”
Mr Telford said the annual old time music night was deemed the perfect opportunity to raise funds.
“We have completed a number of projects over there trying to help them with their ongoing water shortage and now the situation is even more dire,” he said.
“The concert is a fun night with amateur musicians playing all kinds of instruments and there is a really good spread for supper.
“We hope attendees will donate generously given the situation over there at the moment.”
The old time music night will be held at the Mount Gambier Christian Centre on Stafford Street from 7pm tonight.
