MOUNT Gambier residents are encouraged to increase their daily exercise today for Diabetes Australia’s 19th annual Walk to Work Day.
The event calls on locals to walk some or all of the way to work, use the stairs wherever possible, organise a lunchtime walk with colleagues or simply take a walk around the office at least once an hour.
One Australian develops type two diabetes every eight minutes.
Regular walking can lower the risk of type two diabetes and help manage diabetes for people already living with the chronic condition.
Type two diabetes can be prevented in up to 58pc of high risk cases through lifestyle changes, including healthy eating, regular physical activity and weight reduction.
