Cultural diversity celebrated

NOMINATIONS are now open for the 2017 Governor’s Multicultural Awards.

Multicultural affairs minister Zoe Bettison encouraged South Australians to nominate worthy individuals and organisations for the awards, which recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions to cultural diversity.

Migrants from non-English speaking backgrounds make up nearly 13pc of South Australia’s population.

Award categories include arts and culture, community sector, outstanding individual achievement, volunteer and youth.

Last year Mount Gambier volunteer Ann Pick was recognised for her ‘Open Door’ program, encouraging locals to open their homes to migrant TAFE cleaning course graduates.

Multicultural affairs minister Zoe Bettison said South Australia was fortunate to have a well-established multicultural community.

“Given our proud history of cultural diversity, I am certain many of us know someone who is worthy of recognition,” Ms Bettison said.

“These prestigious awards recognise the incredible efforts of many individuals and organisations that contribute so much to our multicultural community.”

Nominations are open until 5pm on October 6.

Visit www.multicultural.sa.gov.au to nominate an organisation or individual.

Winners will be announced in March 2018 at a ceremony at Government House.
