RSL car park request

THE Mount Gambier Community Returned and Services League will make a formal request to Mount Gambier City Council for the removal of a land management agreement on the league’s Ferrers Street car park.

The embattled RSL, the oldest and largest in the state, was forced to put its Sturt Street premises up for sale in June.

Struggling to repay a debt of around $2.5m, the sale of the league’s Ferrers Street car park could keep the iconic institution afloat.

RSL general manager Sam Dwyer said the league had presented its case to the independent Mount Gambier Development Assessment Panel this month.

“We lodged a variation to the development approval and we had five minutes to plead our case and it went very well,” Mr Dwyer said.

“They were sympathetic to our cause and very reasonable – it was a unanimous decision to allow the variation.

“The variation was approved by the development planning board, but it is a two step process and we will go through council.”

City Council chief executive Mark McShane said while the additional car park was a condition of the league’s 2009 redevelopment, council would consider a formal request for the removal of the land agreement.
