Taxi parking bays to be relocated

MOUNT Gambier City Council has resolved to relocate two taxi parking bays on Bay Road.

The two existing taxi bays in front of the Mount Gambier branch of the Commonwealth Bank will be relocated to immediately adjacent James Street, to eliminate the need for taxi’s to reverse park.

The two one-hour public parking spaces currently adjacent James Street will be relocated to the former taxi stand area.

The decision follows a request from Lake City Taxi’s to reinstate four taxi bays on Bay Road, to improve safety for taxi drivers when parking.

In 2015 council reduced four taxi bays on Bay Road to two taxi bays, following a request from the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI), due to a proposed bicycle lane installation.

Members were later advised DPTI had resolved not to proceed with the installation of bicycle lanes on Bay Road and proposed the parking alterations already adopted by council be retained.

The relocation of the taxi bays and public parking spaces will be effective upon the installation of appropriate signage.
