City Council updates pet management plan

MOUNT Gambier City Council has endorsed an updated dog and cat management plan for 2018 to 2023.

The plan contains recommendations for a wide range of actions to be undertaken by council to create an environment which encourages responsible pet ownership.

The updated plan reflects changes to the Dog and Cat Management Act, including increased penalties, mandatory microchipping for both cats and dogs and a new emphasis on cat management.

Under proposed changes taking effect on 1 July 2018, council must nominate a facility where seized or impounded cats are to be taken.

Members of the community who seize a cat using provided traps will be instructed to take cats to council or a nominated veterinary clinic.

Seized cats will be checked for identification and where possible reunited with their owners, while unidentified cats will be rehomed where possible or euthanised at the discretion of council or the nominated veterinary clinic.
