MOUNT Gambier and District Ministers Association president Pastor Errol Carson believes most members of the association will agree they are not the “moral police” of society.
“But I cannot always speak with authority on the opinions of all denominations,” Mr Carson said yesterday.
“While we would have strong views on many subjects that affect our community and will continue to uphold those views as we see them in light of scripture, we do not seek to superimpose our views on the rest of the populace.”
The Border Watch approached Mr Carson for comment in response to the Federal Government’s looming voluntary postal plebiscite on same-sex marriage.
Pastor Carson said sexual choice and preference were the prerogative of every individual.
“While many people of social, political and spiritual persuasions may participate in the debate around this issue, individual Christians of all denominations will also have their opinion,” he said.
“I believe that I can speak on behalf of the participating members of the minister’s association when I say that those participating churches do not wish to make any criticism or judgement on any lesbian, gay, bi, transsexual and intersex (LGBTI) person.”
The pastor said a great number of people in the western world, Christian or otherwise, are generally aware of the standpoint of the scriptures on many themes that affect our society.
While each denomination would continue to teach and preach to the individuals who attend those congregations, Pastor Carson said it would be reasonable to expect for them to have a point of view as any other member of our democratic society.
