MEMBERS of Soroptimist International Mount Gambier (SIMG) met at the Apple Farm last week for the club’s first event of 2019.
The venue was filled with members and guests from across the country and raised $628 for the club’s charity work.
SIMG president Jennie Elliott said the day was a success and praised attendees for their generous support of the group.
“We start off every year with a get together and we wanted this one to be a really joyous occasion,” she said.
“We wanted to raise funds for this year’s education grant and I’m proud of our achievement.
“Our 2018 grant will be awarded on February 12 so we’re already looking forward to our next one.”
The group’s education grant is aimed at young women who have experienced hardship in their life.
“We ask women in their last year of schooling to apply for the grant,” Ms Elliott said.
“The hope is that with the extra money they will be able to continue their education after high school which they might not be able to without it.
“They may use the grant for accommodation, or a computer or whatever they like – it’s up to the individual.”
In addition to the education grant, the club will also focus on supporting victims of family violence and homelessness this year.
“We always welcome new members who have similar views to us,” Ms Elliott said.
“Originally Soroptimists was for professional and business women but now it is really just for like minded women who want to support those who need it most.
“We support local, statewide and overseas charities which are greatly important to us.”
