Gold Cup launched

THE launch of the 2018 Scott Group of Companies Mount Gambier Gold Cup was held on Monday night in preparation for the highly anticipated event.

Mount Gambier Racing Club Committee president John Fartch welcomed guests and sponsors to the Mount Gambier Hotel, emphasising the benefits of the special twilight running of the gold cup on December 1 for the community.

“In my time as president, this is the biggest event we have had – it is looking magnificent,” Mr Fartch said.

“Since coming onto the committee, I have been pushing for an event like this as it is time for change.”

The president hoped the event would allow the club to move on to bigger and better things following the upgrade of the track.

“It is looking like it will be a great success and that is thanks to overwhelming support from the community,” Mr Fartch said.

Club manager Brett Watson said he was looking forward to the historical event with two runnings of the cup to be held in one year due to the 2018 race being brought forward to allow a major overhaul of the track.

“There are 18 more marquees than we had in May, which is very exciting and they have started going up a week earlier than normal,” Mr Watson said.

“It is a great event that we will continue to build on year after year.”
