High school students on theatre stage

BUDDING musicians and actors from Grant High School took to the stage yesterday in a fantastic performance of the locally created musical Spectrum.

Under the direction of co-creators Mike Bakker and Scott Maxwell, the group of around 60 students shone as they worked together to tell the story of a small community’s battle to save their town.

It all begins when a big shot businessman makes his way to the town with a vision to reinstate an old mine to add to his riches.

However, he is faced with a difficult challenge when the town’s children decide to rally together and put a stop to his plans to ensure the town remains a safe place to live.

Producer and assistant director Abbey Marston-Kleemann said the students had continued to improve over the weeks and were 100pc ready to perform yesterday.

“Having everything come together after months of hard work is just awesome and the students are really getting into character,” she said.

“Leah Fox has done an amazing job with the set design it has created such a great atmosphere.

“It is especially exciting for Scott and Mike seeing it finally be performed on a stage – it is their baby.”

The musical will be performed again today at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre at 10am and 7.30pm with tickets available at the box office.

The Border Watch attended the final rehearsal earlier this week to capture images of the performance, however although sets were in place, costumes were kept under wraps until yesterday’s official debut.
