THERE is no doubt the loud rumble of Kris Winterfield’s supercharged Holden Commodore VE ute will capture attention when car cruise events return as COVID-19 restrictions ease.

Extracting a bigger bang and delivering more power, Mr Winterfield recently completed the build of his 2010 classic Holden after many long nights and hours spent in his workshop.

As the proud owner of Gambier Kustom Autos, the automotive specialist said the vehicle was a clear reflection of what his business was capable of achieving.

“I have basically built the vehicle from the ground up out of a range of parts I had laying around,” he said.

“It was all going to go into a different car originally, but I had somebody approach me about a Commodore which had hit a kangaroo.

“They asked me whether I wanted to buy it for parts and I really did not want it at the time.”

Mr Winterfield said around six months later he was asked again and decided to purchase the car shell at a relatively cheap price.

“It had already been striped so I cut it back and tubbed it. I basically built what it is now from nothing,” he said.

“It has been freshly built and has only had about an hour of running time.

“It really is a bit of a burnout car for cruiser type of events.”

Beginning work on the vehicle around two years ago, Mr Winterfield said the paint, engine, fittings, hoses and most features were completely custom.

“I have done plenty of cars like this before and in a way, I guess people kept asking me what I was going to do next so this was it,” he said.

“The car is a custom colour which began as a HSV colour and was mixed in our spare time.”

Out of all its unique components, Mr Winterfield said he loved the fact it was a supercharged car the most.

“They are just not like anything else and it just has so much power it is not funny,” he said.

“I could not count how many cars I have worked on over the years, it would be in the hundreds.

“This is my third supercharged vehicle so everything I have done to it, I know has been done well.”

Mr Winterfield said he tested the vehicle himself at the Mount Gambier and District Saleyards during the the South East Motorsport Alliance’s Driftkhana event.

“It was ready for some of the bigger power cruising events in Adelaide, but that all got cancelled,” he said.

Never growing too attached to the vehicle Mr Winterfield said he built the car to eventually sell it.

“It is ready to use or sell and if I still have it when the events start back up again I will use it,” he said.

“It was always the plan to use it until I sell it.

“But if somebody does buy it, I am hoping they will use it for what it was made for.”
