1967 MKI GT Cortina

SOME would say actress and comedian Betty White is full of attitude, just like her namesake Peter and Maxine Pickrell’s replica 1967 MKI GT Cortina.

Purchased by the couple almost two years ago, the vehicle is Ms Pickrell’s pride and joy.

With a love of motoring throughout her whole life, a Cortina was something she had always dreamed of and she was finally able to realise it.

“I have always loved cars but Cortinas were my favourite,” she said.

“Betty was for sale in Hamilton and even though I wasn’t in the market, I knew I had to have her.”

Ms Pickrell drove Betty home and with minor improvements, she was restored to her former glory.

The Pickrell’s love of cars brought them into the South East Street Machines around nine years ago, a club where they can share their passion with like-minded individuals.

The club will host its 40th anniversary Show and Shine this weekend and Ms Pickrell is working hard to make sure Betty is in pristine condition for the event.

“We really love being apart of the club,” Ms Pickrell said.

“It’s a great social club and everyone is always lending their knowledge or helping you out whenever you need it.

“Our XG XR6 will also be on show at the event so Peter is preparing that.”

In addition to the club’;s show n shines, Ms Pickrell has also taken Betty to other events including the Cortina Nationals in Albury.

“It was something different and exciting that we hadn’t done before,” she said.

“Betty drove like a dream the whole way there.

“We had a lot of fun at the event and it was great to check out the other Cortinas on show.”

Although the Cortina is a pretty special part of Ms Pickrell’s life, she doesn’t keep it hidden away.

“I drive Betty to the shopping centre every Friday to get our groceries,” she said.

“There is not a day that I drive her that people don’t come over to ask questions.

“She’s definitely a talking piece.”
