SOUND PROGRESS: Penola Music Festival committee member Anne Miller says the up and coming event is progressing full steam ahead and will abide by COVID-19 guidelines.

LIMESTONE Coast music lovers will also get a laugh out of the headline act booked for the inaugural Penola Music Festival.

Comedic musician Peter Denahy will take to the stage at McCorquindale Park during the three-day 2021 event established following the cancellation of the Frances Folk Festival.

Known for his hilarity in folk-styled music, the Yackandandah, Victoria artist sings and plays original guitar, mandolin and fiddle tunes and is a family favourite at events across the nation.

Event committee member Anne Miller said the group decided Mr Dehany was suitable as the festival’s headline act because of his positive reputation in the Limestone Coast.

“We know him and have seen him a few times, he has a fun and family-friendly comedy act and it was one that was well known and loved at the Frances Folk Festival,” Ms Miller said.

“We thought we would start off with a well-known performer and we are still continuing to search for local performers to join the line up as well.”

With planning going ahead despite COVID-19 measures, Ms Miller said it was full steam ahead with plenty of time to work out the kinks.

“Everything will still go ahead subject to COVID-19 restrictions,” she said.

“We have some fantastic musicians and its going to be an equal range of artists who are popular in the folk and country genre.”

Alongside the lineup coming together, the committee also commissioned Penola artist Cate Bell for the release of the event’s logo.

Incorporating the Coonawarra and Penola region and music, the logo design showcases grape vines and a guitar neck in a colourful and eye-catching way.

“We are thrilled with how the design has come out and think it looks wonderful,” Ms Miller said.

“It is eye catching, it will attract attention and hopefully draw people to the event.”

Ms Miller said the committee was calling on residents and businesses to help with event preparations.

“We are in the process of applying for grants to help us with the costs of the event but we are in dire need of volunteers,” she said.

“We are sensitive about approaching local businesses as we are aware of the tough times post COVID-19.

“However if anyone is able to assist, whether through sponsorship or even in-kind support, it would be wonderful.”

The event is will get under way on Friday, March 12, 2021 and will run until Sunday, March 14, with camping available to patrons for the duration.

A day pass will cost attendees $25 or $65 for a weekend pass with a Sunday market planned to see off the event.
