STEAM from a chicken cooker resulted in the evacuation of Woolworths yesterday after fire alarms were triggered inside the supermarket.

Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) crews attended the Commercial Street East store at around 10.45am, however there was found to be no active fire.

MFS station officer Phil Wood said steam from the “chicken cooker” had escaped its vented area.

“This was the standard response and we were happy to see Woolworths followed their procedures by evacuating the store,” Mr Wood said.

Mr Wood said the MFS monitor 70 different fire alarms around the city in buildings which are deemed higher risk due to their occupancy.

“They basically allows us to respond as quickly as possible,” he said.
