STRONG SUPPORT: Mount Gambier Lions Club president Trevor Jacobs has congratulated club members on their strong support for the community despite COVID-19 setbacks.

MEMBERS have flocked back to the Lions Club of Mount Gambier following a suspension of meetings for four months due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The avid volunteers have continued their service to the community since March by conducting activities in smaller groups.

Among the activities was the annual wood cutting fundraiser, with Mount Gambier City Council giving members access to a property with excessive wood to cut and distribute across the community.

Lions club president Trevor Jacobs said with restrictions now eased, members were eager to resume their community service.

“There are a few members who are cautious of what the future may hold, especially when they look at the situation over in Victoria,” Mr Jacobs said.

“We had our first meeting in four months this week and there was a good representation of memberships there.”

Mr Jacobs said members had met in small groups and undertaken smaller activities to retain the social interaction many look forward to.

“We abide by the health guidelines and took part in social distancing and the rest of it when we did meet up but it was fantastic to see the socialisation that took place,” he said.

“Despite all of the difficulties we have had since March, the future continues to look bright for the club and although we do not have a great deal on at the moment that can change at anytime.”

The club has been left with major impacts to its fundraising due to the cancellation of many community events.

However, Mr Jacobs said it was full steam ahead for the remainder of the year as the club plans to hold several smaller fundraisers.

“When we asked for volunteers for the up and coming events we were not short,” he said.

“Most of our members are eager to get back out there and serve the community and help where they can.”

Mr Jacobs said members’ willingness to support the community was a major positive for the organisation and highlighted the club’s strength.

“We are all excited to get back out there but we are also happy to be able to get back to some type of normal,” he said.
