MOUNT Gambier residents are encouraged to put an artistic twist on their blue bins in a City Council-backed project which melds the importance of recycling and creativity.
The humble wheelie bin became a symbol of a creativity during COVID-19-induced isolation, with people dressing up in costumes to take their bins out and posting pictures and videos to social media.
Council has put its own spin on the internet craze, developing a bin-painting tutorial through its Riddoch At Home program to support the competition.
Residents can paint the bottom half of their blue recycling bin to either identify their street number, or to promote the types of materials that can be recycled.
“Council has ramped up waste and recycling initiatives around the city with the recent introduction of a bulky waste trial, suspension of FOGO fees and a waste survey which will help to inform an upcoming education campaign, so to complement that we came up with the idea to offer a competition for dressing up your recycling bin,” Riddoch and Main Corner coordinator Talie Teakle said.
“Not only does it encourage people to learn about the items going into recycling, but it will also add a lot of colour and individuality to bin day in your street,” she said.
A first and second prize will be awarded across two categories – bins featuring street numbers and artwork with a recycling theme.
“First prize winners will receive a compost bin from the Compost Revolution range and a $25 art supplies voucher to be spent at the Riddoch and Main Corner retail shop, while second prize is a $50 ReUse Market voucher and a $25 art supplies voucher,” Ms Teakle said.

Only the blue recycling bin can be painted and any artwork must be below the logo.
Any entries that include negative or derogatory content will not be considered and modifications that impact the structural integrity of the bin are not permitted, such as drilling holes.
