Winter weather tipped to boost sales

SALES of jigsaw puzzles are set to rise at a Millicent charity book shop according to volunteer Kathleen Staude.

She said the cold weather and concerns about the COVID-19 virus have combined to keep people indoors with brain teasers growing in popularity.

Ms Staude and her 20 fellow volunteers are again welcoming tourists and locals to their Millicent Lioness Club bookshop.

After a COVID-19 enforced closure lasting around three months, shoppers are again looking for bargain-priced books, CDs and DVDs.

Among them on Friday was Millicent resident Ves Piotrowski.

“I have lived in Millicent for about a year but this is the first time I have been to the bookshop,” he said.

“I am after books about science and astronomy.”

The shop has about 2000 titles and the proceeds support various charities, causes and community projects.

Year-round, a steady number of buyers pass through the shop in the IGA supermarket in George Street each Friday and Saturday.

The service club adds some Sunday trading sessions at the height of the festive season.

After success with pop-up bookshops at successive Geltwood Festivals, the service club has staged a book shop in various fixed locations in Millicent for over the past four years.
