YAHL Primary School students will get their hands dirty today at new nature play area onsite.
As part of her final school placement, student teacher Brooke Millard has helped the site’s foundation and Year 1 class plan and create a mud kitchen nature play space.
Students were introduced to mathematics, literacy, tech and design as they developed ideas for a space at the rear of the school.
Ms Millard said nature play was a fantastic way for children to learn, develop language, physical coordination, fine motor skills, empathy, problem solving skills, decision making and general social and emotional skills.
“Play is the way children develop their sense of self and where they fit within the world,” Ms Millard said.
“Mud and nature play encourages opportunities for children to play imaginatively with
others.
“It is essential for children to seek opportunities of creativity within a stress free environment which is free from any technology influences.”
Ms Millard said nature play also offered a sensory experience for younger minds which is directly connected to plants and living creatures.
“They offer endless opportunities for discovery outside of regular place spaces,” she said.
A Mud Play Day has been organised for today to officially launch the new area.
