THE Southend Caravan Park is set to close in its present form in August after Wattle Range Council recently considered another staff report on its future.

If all goes to plan, the area will become solely an RV park and only house self-contained motor vehicles as motorhomes.

The park adjoins the waters of Rivoli Bay and is located on Crown land.

The current lease expires in August, council has spent months discussing its future.

Matters relating to the park were discussed on a confidential basis for 15 minutes at the June monthly meeting with a number of motions passed.

Council will start the process for the removal of all relevant structures on the Southend caravan park site.

The meeting also recommended the start of the tender process for the operation and management of the Southend Caravan Park and Bush Camp as an RV only Park.

Earlier in the open portion of the meeting, a submission was tabled by Southend couple Liz and Kym Redman about the council’s annual business plan and budget.

“In the plan we can see no mention of any monies allocated for the improvements and running of the Southend-on-Sea Caravan Park,” the Redmans wrote.

“The caravan park in the past has had good occupancy rates both by visitors and return campers but have gradually dropped off.

“These people spend money in the town and in the wider council area.

“At the moment the caravan park is an eyesore and not appealing to stay at, but feel that it can be made to work successfully with a relatively small expenditure.

“The people who own the onsite buildings should be made to dismantle and remove them then the area could be replanted and an upgrade of the amenities block could be carried out.

“The bones are still there.

“We feel that not spending any money on this facility to keep it operational until the council knows what will be done to develop another park would be short-sighted.

“There have been improvements carried out in the town, walking trails with seating and a new playground amongst others, under the guidance of the Sports and Progress Association and an improved Southend-on-Sea Caravan Park would add to these.”
