SEALED PROJECT: Grant District Council chief executive Darryl Whicker and mayor Richard Sage inspect Ridge Road, Mingbool which will be bituminised from Peweena Road to the Riddoch Highway.

A $264,000 reconstruction and resealing project on Mingbool’s Ridge Road is among the headline projects of Grant District Council’s $3.6m road construction program for 2020-21.

Elected members voted in support of council’s annual business plan and budget at this week’s meeting, which includes $3.64m for road construction works across 29 different sites.

The final stage of the Ridge Road reconstruction will be complete, with seal works starting from Peweena Road continuing for another 1.3km to the Riddoch Highway.

Approximately 1.3km of the unsealed Ridge Road will be reconstructed which when complete, will be fully bitumised to the Riddoch Highway.

Council has allocated $275,361 to reconstruct 1.6km of Cafpirco Road, Compton.

A further $229,706 will be spent to reconstruct 2km of Sewarts Road, Allendale East and the Federal Government will fully fund a staggered t-junction at Ruwoldt and Yahl Road.

Across the council district, 28km of unsealed roads will be resheeted, while Marion Terrace (Tarpeena), Dry Creek Road (Donovans) and Hammer Parade (Pelican Point) will undergo kerb and chanelling works.

Peweena Road, Mingbool and Kongorong’s Butler Street will also be upgraded.

Grant District Council chief executive Darryl Whicker said road construction projects were ongoing and a core component of council’s business.

He said capital works were prioritised each year with regard to council’s long-term financial management plan, capital works program and road condition assessments.

Grant District Mayor Richard Sage said council’s original works program had been increased following the recent addition of $235,000 Federal Government funding for the construction of a staggered t-junction at Ruwoldt and Yahl Road, Yahl.

“Council’s regular road patrol grading repair program and ongoing operational works such as pot holing also continue,” he said.

Stage two of the Port MacDonnell waterfront project ($770,000) and a car park at town’s old boat yard ($92,073) are among the other capital projects to be funded next financial year.

Council will spend $40,000 on an additional toilet facility at Carpenter Rocks and $100,000 – half of which will be funded under a grant – to replace the Brown Bay toilet.

According to council, the majority of Grant district residential ratepayers will pay “the same or less” in rates than 2019/20.

Some primary producers will bear higher increases due to increases in land valuations, but council will cap rates at 6pc.
