A GLOBAL campaign to provide immediate food relief during the COVID-19 pandemic has boosted the region’s Foodbank service.

Foodbank Limestone Coast received $5000 from Nutrien Ag Solutions’ Mount Gambier branch this week as part of the global company’s internal COVID-19 Community Support
Plan.

Foodbank branch manager Lynne Neshoda said the generous donation would be used to purchase and distribute pantry staples to people in need.

“This money will be used to buy essential household items which should be readily available in everybody’s cupboards,” Ms Neshoda said.

“With demand growing due to COVID-19, our costs are predominately in that area so this will be a huge help.

“This funding will equivilate to providing around 10,000 meals for those in need and we thank Nutrien Ag Solutions for its support.”

The source of funding was instigated by Nutrien Ag Solutions Mount Gambier branch administration officer Erica Mewett when she responded to a call-out from head office.

Ms Mewett said she was asked whether the branch had any individual or organisation in mind which it was interested in supporting and Foodbank immediately came to mind.

“We wanted to keep the funds in Mount Gambier and help those in need,” Ms Mewett said.

“Foodbank is a community-minded organisation which helps provide food to those in need and schools too.”

Nutrien Ag Solutions Mount Gambier branch manager Steven Fulton said Foodbank was a fantastic service which offered vulnerable communities a place to access help with food.

“Sometimes you do not really think or realise how lucky we are and have jobs, especially during these times, to provide for our families,” he said.

“The reach of the branch is larger than I expected and it is great to see how many people it is helping.”

Mr Fulton said the funding tied in well with the company’s agricultural background as Foodbank was quite often supported by local farmers and producers.

Anybody requiring support and assistance has been encouraged to contact Foodbank Limestone Coast on 8723 0287.
