Community urged to support artists during pandemic

ART ATTACK: Local Images owner Harriet Mort is encouraging locals to continue to support artists from around the region via social media while also encouraging artists to utilise their free time to develop unique pieces of work.

A PROMINENT business owner and artist is encouraging community members to continue to support the arts and contribute to a healthy cultural community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Local Images owner Harriet Mort said while galleries and artistic centres remained closed, residents were still able to continue to support the region’s creative and cultural sector.

“People do not necessarily need to buy things from the artists because it is a difficult time for all, but they can further support them by helping artists get their names out there,” she said.

“I am lucky because I can still come to the shop and paint out here by myself, but a lot of people do not have that luxury and need our support.”

Ms Mort said she was confident of a strong wave of support for artists and festivals after COVID-19 restrictions had been eased, with those involved using their time in isolation to develop ideas and works.

“Art during these times are very important as it is brilliant for mental health and has been helping people get their mind off things especially if they are feeling stressed,” she said.

Ms Mort encouraged individuals who are self-isolating or in quarantine to learn a new skill such as painting or drawing to help with any mental challenge they may be facing.

“People should also take this time to try a new skill and learn how to create some art, whether that is painting or drawing, even if they have not done it before,” she said.

“I have also been trying out some new techniques from videos, because it is really a good time to get those extra skills at hand.”

“Even though the shop is closed, there is something peaceful about being out here uninterrupted and just being able to get things done.

“It is just a silver lining to the situation.”
