KALANGADOO teenager Angus Langsmith won an important annual competition for youth at the Lions Youth of the Year zone final at Millicent High School on Sunday.

The Grant High School student represented the Millicent Lioness Club and the runner-up was Naracoorte Lions Club representative Olivia Neagle.

The public speaking award went to Millicent High School student Madeleine Fewster who represented the Millicent Lions Club.

With an attendance of 60, there was a strong representation from the families of the candidates and the Millicent Lions Club as well as Lions zone chairman Keith Field.

The public speaking ability of the eight candidates was taken into account by judges Wattle Range councillor Moira Neagle, Millicent solicitor Wendy Botting and Red Cross Limestone Coast regional director David Walshaw.

Ms Neagle said judges were faced by a group of candidates with outstanding personal qualities.

“We were impressed with the amount they do,” Ms Neagle said.

“Quite a few have been on humanitarian trips to Vietnam and Cambodia.

“The students are active in sports and all have strong academic records.”

Held around the nation, the Lions Youth of the Year is designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership.

The overall winner will be announced at the annual national Lions convention in Adelaide in May.
