HEAVY demolition machinery rolled onto the Olympic Park site this week, however the project was not in relation to the looming Mount Gambier Community and Recreation Hub development.
Instead, Mount Gambier City Council engaged contractors to demolish a small former netball clubroom to enable reconfiguration of an existing court to regulation standard.
A council spokesperson said works had started to ensure it was completed for the Mount Gambier Netball Association’s upcoming winter season.
“The former netball clubroom is expected to be removed by the end of this week, allowing work to start on the construction of the reconfigured court,” they said.
However, building works associated with the Mount Gambier Community and Recreation Hub project will not start until the tender process is completed.
“Further demolition works are subject to the work plan of the head contractor who will be appointed once the council completes the current, live tender process,” a spokesperson said.
“The work on the former netball clubroom is a separate works package and is occurring now in order to accommodate the approaching netball season.”
The Girl Guides have already vacated its home of six decades – which was leased from council – to make way for the hub.
After uncertainty about where the group would relocate, council offered the group a shed at Hastings Cunningham Reserve and contributed up to $37,000 for refurbishments.
The Open Door Baptist Church has also moved from its O’Halloran Terrace site to make way for future demolition, relocating to the Senior Citizen’s building on James Street.
While demolition on the building has not started, the inside is bare and messages have been written on the walls informing the community of the group’s relocation.
