THERE is strong interest across Millicent and district in this weekend’s Clean Up Australia Day going by the number of groups and individuals already registered.

Although the official day is Sunday, the Millicent Shooting Starz Girl Guides made an early start last night.

They donned hats and protective gloves and did their bit for the environment at Southend.

The group removed rubbish from the area near the drain.

Looking ahead to Sunday, Millicent resident Jo Hughes is spearheading a push to remove rubbish from around the swimming lake and surrounding streets.

Her aim will get volunteers on deck between 10am and noon.

“As we have a young family, we love to spend time at the swimming lake,” Ms Hughes said.

“My kids will comment if they see rubbish about the lake.

“If people cannot come to the lake, they might like to spend some time cleaning up the streets around their homes.

“When I was younger, I travelled around Australia and my mind was opened to the polluted environment.

“I want to give back to the community and do my bit.

“I would like my kids to have respect for the planet.”

Meanwhile, the Beachport District Development Association has been a keen supporter of Clean Up Australia Day for many years.

The 2020 gathering point will be the Lagoon Reserve at 9.30am.

Seaside participants are asked to wear a hat, sunscreen and covered shoes.

Area maps, collection bags, gloves and safety vests will be supplied, along with drinking water.

A sausage sizzle will follow the clean up which is set to last two or three hours.
