WITH more favourable weather conditions, Mount Gambier and District tennis matches went ahead as usual on Saturday afternoon, as senior teams contested the penultimate minor round of the 2019-20 season.

In Division 1 the closest match-up was played between Glencoe Maroon and West Gambier’s men at Glencoe.

With three sets each, the visitors claimed the points based off the game count, winning three extra games to the hosts.

A 6-0 win to West’s Brady Cook over reserve player Will Hann helped, while Cook and Noah Lang teamed up for a 6-1 win over Hann and Andrew Hughes to aid the cause.

The closest match for the day was a 7-6 tie-break win to Lang over Hughes.

Both other men’s fixtures saw four-set victories, as ladder leader Centrals defeated fourth-placed Reidy Park and Glencoe Gold showed Uniting Church why it is second on the ladder.

Even with a forfeit, Centrals’ win was without doubt, as the hosts won every other set.

Mark Heemskerk defeated Zayne Young in a tie-break for the closest result of the clash.

Over at Uniting Church it was the same story, with one forfeit from Glencoe Gold awarding the hosts their only set of the day.

Patrick Mitchell and Dave Boyce both won their singles 6-1, while the closest set was a 7-5 win to Patrick and Peter Mitchell in their doubles match against Daniel Moon and Travis Crowe.

In the women’s competition ladder leader Reidy Park drew a deep line in the sand with a four-set win over second-placed West Gambier.

Joanne Sealey’s 6-2 win over Reidy’s Bailey Young was the only success for the guests, while Young went on to win both of her doubles combinations comfortably.

Emily Edwards defeated Laura McIntyre 6-3, while the closest game was Sharon Edwards’ 7-5 win over Leanne Ballintyne.

Outside the Blue Lake city, Glencoe hosted Uniting Church for a 5-1 set win.

The only success for the visitors was Casey Walker and Vanessa Maxwell’s doubles partnership, which they won 6-2 over Jorja Mitchell and Cassie Edwards.

However, it was not enough to prevent the hosts from an easy victory heading into this week’s final minor round against Reidy Park.
