A MILLICENT business has thanked its customers and the wider community for their support in raising around $4500 for the victims of the ongoing fires across Australia.

The Millicent Newsagency appeal lasted almost a month and came to a close on Friday.

The newsagency banked $2558.55 into the Kangaroo Island Mayoral Appeal Fund as well as $1000 each into wildlife parks at Cudlee Creek and Kangaroo Island.

Last month, proprietors Paul and Barb Smith placed two large symbolic water bottles for notes and small change in their Glen Street premises.

Furthermore, 50 cents from each cup of coffee sold at Millicent Newsagency during January was donated to bushfire relief efforts.

The third major fundraising initiative was a bring-and-buy cake stall which returned $1200 to the appeal.

Ms Smith said Millicent was fortunate to have a generous community.

“There have been other appeals for bushfire relief in Millicent and the donations have been spread across the town,” Ms Smith said.

Kangaroo Island Mayor Michael Pengilly has repeatedly expressed his gratitude for the donations which have come from every corner of the globe.

Mayor Pengilly said he was eternally grateful for the outpouring of support for the island and Mayoral Fund.

“The response is heart-warming and overwhelming,” he said.

“I urge anyone still thinking of committing funds to those on KI who need financial support the most, at this time of greatest need, to please give generously”.
