HOMEGROWN gardeners are encouraged to tender their best truss, Rome and cherry tomatoes as the annual Tomato Competition entries open.
The competition consists of four categories, including best, biggest, prettiest and most diseased tomato.
Coonawarra resident and event coordinator Maria Weinberg said greenthumbs of all ages and ability should consider entering the competition.
“It is just a fun competition that everyone wants to be in,” Ms Weinberg said.
“It is a little different to past years, with this one the money gained will go to the Coonawarra Community Club.
“In previous years it would go to the local Country Fire Services and other areas.”
Inspired by competitions in other areas, Ms Weinberg established the event in 2014.
“There are tomato events like this held across the globe,” she said.
“Other countries host entire festivals around the tomato so we were looking at doing something closer to home.”
“We have beautiful soil and weather here for tomatoes and we have a great community response to the competition each and every year.”
Eager competitors are encouraged to start planting as the competition is scheduled to be held on March 6.
Entry forms are available from Meek’s Butcher, Coonawarra Store or the Coonawarra Community Club and the entry fee is $20.
