MILLICENT became the base for dozens of historic vehicles on Saturday.

The Mount Gambier Veteran and Vintage Car Club placed the busy Millicent National Trust Museum on its program for its 55th annual January tour.

People took the opportunity to inspect the cars during the few hours they were in town.

Among the rally participants was Adelaide motorist Geoff Chase who showed off his gleaming 1961 Chrysler Valiant R Series sedan.

Assembled in Adelaide almost six decades ago, it has travelled almost 600,000km with its original motor.

“Only 1008 of these were made,” Mr Chase said.

“I bought the car second-hand in 1966 and it has been my daily drive car ever since.

“It has been re-painted only once in the past 54 years.

“My wife comes with me on our tours along with our 23-year-old galah called Dodge.

“It has travelled to Perth and back with us.”

“We have been on a number of these Mount Gambier tours in January over the past 20 years or so.

“I have about 20 historic Chrysler cars with the oldest built in 1958 and the newest in 1965.

“I started my collection when they were cheap to buy and they are all Chryslers.

“Some of them are on display at the Feast motor museum at Port MacDonnell.”

Now aged 82, the retired house-painter was full of praise for the Millicent National Trust Museum.

“It is well set out and the exhibits are well labelled.”

His opinions were shared by other rally participants.

The 53 historic vehicles were based at Mount Gambier over the holiday long weekend and the Sunday was spent at Nelson.
