HAY DAY: Penola and District Leo Club has donated baled hay to bushfire affected areas near Kingston.

PENOLA and District Leo Club has donated 100 round bales of hay to further support farmers in Kingston affected by recent bushfires.

The Keilira fire burnt close to 25,000 hectares of land and caused thousands of dollars of damage.

Leo club president Will Goodes said the club was pleased to be able to help farmers in the South East who had suffered losses.

Mr Goodes and his grandfather Ken Mountford cut and bailed around 400 bales of hay in December for the Leo club.

Although there is a strong demand for assistance across the nation due to drought and bushfire conditions, the pair felt supporting the region’s farmers was an effective way of providing help.

The Hay project is a joint venture between Penola Leo and Lions clubs, Wattle Range Council and the Mountford family, while Geoff Pahl and John Zwar helped move the bales.

The club has a licence to bale hay at the Penola Airstrip site for two years and plans to make further donations to support the community and other worthy causes.
