AUSSIE pride was on display throughout the Cave Gardens on Sunday as Mount Gambier residents flocked to central location for the annual Australia Day Breakfast.

The Lakes Rotary Club had the barbecue sizzling with bacon and eggs from 8am as hundreds of people found a spot on the grass for the formal celebrations and awards.

Rain and unseasonal temperatures did not deter the strong crowd from singing the national anthem proudly as the Australian flag was raised by the 48th Australian Army Cadet Unit.

Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin thanked the community for sharing in the celebrations in the heart of the city and highlighted the many selfless volunteers who have given back to the community.

“As I think about what makes Australia so great and reflect on my first year as mayor of this wonderful city, I continue to be amazed by the volunteers in our community,” she said.

“I believe if it were not for the service clubs, organisations and the individuals, Mount Gambier would not continue to thrive.”

In wake of the devastating bushfires that continue to burn throughout the country, Ms Martin also extended her gratitude to those who have bravely fought on the front-line to protect Australia.

“Where would we be without the volunteer firefighters who so readily brave these terrifying and horrific conditions,” she said.

“Our thoughts are also with those who have lost loved ones, precious belongings, animals, homes, properties, businesses and even their livelihood.”

The heartfelt message was followed by the presentation of the Australia Day awards.

Mother-daughter duo, Caitlin and Lorenza McMahon took out the young citizen of the year and citizen of the year respectively for their dedicated service to the community.

Holding back tears, Lorenza said she was humbled to be able to share the special moment alongside her family.

“As a parent I am proud to know we have raised our children to have a humanitarian approach to life and understand the value of helping and giving to others,” she said.

“To this I thank my parents for their guidance and passing on this legacy.”

Senior citizen of the year was awarded to long-serving Lioness Janet Bellinger for her 20 years of service to the organisation while the community event of the year was awarded to Empak Homes BrickGambier.

Ms Martin also delivered a special tribute for the late Eve Barratt who was awarded an Order of Australia Medal posthumously.
