ENCOURAGING INITIATIVE: Mount Gambier Library youth coordinator Rebecca Coates looks forward to the range of activities in store over the summer holidays.

LIMESTONE Coast youths are being urged to book now for the Mount Gambier Library’s Summer Reading Club with around 150 registrations to date.

The library is also preparing for a bumper school holiday period with a host of activities planned this month, including everything from jean art and dance classes, to movie screenings and video game sessions.

Bookings opened Monday for the school holiday activities which complement the reading club – a national initiative encouraging children to visit libraries and read.

Mount Gambier Library youth coordinator Rebecca Coates said the January schedule would include science, culture, craft, performing arts and more.

The events have also been categorised so they are age-appropriate.

“We will also host a few activities that are drop-in sessions which means people do not need to book in advance,” Ms Coates said.

“However with most things bookings are essential.”

Ms Coates said library staff had received fantastic feedback from parents in the past.

“Events and activities such as the Summer Reading Club ones are so important,” she said.

“The parents keep telling us it is a great way for them to get the children out and about, but it is also a great way for the children to get involved in their local communities.

“It also allows the children to get familiar with the local library and ensures they are comfortable here which we think is very important.”

This year’s club theme is A Room Full of Stories, focusing on Indigenous language, with participants given a registration pack including bookmarks which double as prize entries.

The bookmarks allow children to fill out their reading habits with a complete bookmark counting as a lucky dip entry and an entry into a major prize draw, which will be drawn at the end the finale party.

The end-of-month celebration will be held at Mount Gambier’s Cave Gardens.
