New civic leader joins district council ranks

NEWLY elected Grant District Council elected member has pledged to engage widely, foster transparency and make “common sense” decisions for the community.

Cr Duncan was elected to sit in the council chamber in a recent supplementary election, which filled a vacancy left following the resignation of Cr Julie Reis.

With a extensive farming background, a passion for the community and a focus on financial accountability, the new councillor said he was honoured to be elected.

“It is quite humbling to be elected and I will work hard to become an effective councillor who engages with the community,” Cr Duncan said.

“I would like to thank ratepayers for giving me this opportunity to represent the central ward.”

He looks forward to the challenges and the opportunity for growth in this new role.

With a desire to connect with the grassroots community, Cr Duncan has pledged to consult widely and undertake a “common sense” approach to local government.

He revealed he chose to nominate for the election because it had always been a “wishlist” to represent the community.

“I enjoy being a leader and giving back to the community. I was looking for a challenge given my children are now more independent,” the newly elected councillor said.

“Council runs a $15m business and operates best with its cornerstone values of economic development, roads, rates and rubbish.

“I believe in open and transparent decision making and I intend to build on the level of engagement
and consultation within the community to ensure ratepayers views are reflected in council.”

Attending his first formal council meeting in the chamber this week, Cr Duncan said he was buoyed by the council collective and its goals.

“I look forward to being part of an informed, united and progressive council to help build a stronger future for our community,” he said.

“I am passionate about the Mount Gambier district and the opportunities it offers.

“Our region offers a wonderful lifestyle and I wish to see future economic development and increased employment growth for our region.

While council did not have a direct input, he said local government could drive growth through infrastructure, policies and strategic planning.

“I have a wide set of skills and business experience that will allow me to add value as a councillor. I am interested in how businesses operate and the role of council may take to foster economic development,” Cr Duncan said.

Living on farming property at Suttontown, Cr Duncan holds a degree in accounting/financial planning and has a strong understanding of financial accountability as well as sustainability.

Cr Duncan – who works at a regional high school as its business manager and is married to Kylie and has three children – also has a myriad of interests, including fishing as well as supporting local football, netball and basketball teams.

He described the Grant district as a wonderful and enviable place to live.

“It is home to beautiful beaches, the Glenelg River and it is green and has water, – we live in a really great region,” Cr Duncan said.
