Sport grant helps youngsters gear up

FRIENDS TRAINING TOGETHER: Oliver Warren, Hamish Damhuis, Grayson Hawke and Rafe Pearce get ready to do long jump at Little Athletics.

THE region’s youngest athletes are boasting a range of new sports gear after the Millicent and District Little Athletics club received a $5000 equipment grant.

The Millicent group is among 316 centres across Australia to share in more than $1.1m in Coles sports equipment grants, with the funds raised through the sale of the supermarket’s cooler bags.

Millicent Little Athletics’ president Katrina Warren said the grant would make a big difference to the group, which required modern equipment to continue to provide a high-quality and safe program.

“The timing gates will help us to run our meets more efficiently and give athletes more accurate times for their track events,” she said.

“We’ll also be able to lend the timing gates to the schools that use our facilities – the grant will not only help our athletes, but kids from the whole community.”

The world-class timing and training system is expected to be in use for next year’s training sessions, held Wednesdays from 4.30pm at Newbery Park Primary School.

End of season trophies were awarded to the athletes who have maintained frequent attendance and shown improvement.

The club will offer half-yearly memberships in 2020 with a barbecue held for children and parents.
