THE Adelaide Football Club are well poised to land a spot in next year’s AFL grand final with “a heap of new bloods” in the club, according to one avid supporter.
The South East Crows Support Group held its annual function on November 8 at the Linksview Bistro – Blue Lake Public Golf Links with special guest, football player Jake Kelly.
President Trevor Robert said the group had been running since 1996 and had strong members of around 100 people.
“I think Mount Gambier has tried to have almost every AFL football support club, but most of them have crashed,” Mr Robert said.
“We are lucky and I am not even sure there are any others still going in Mount Gambier, I think we might be the only one.
“If there is another one, you do not hear from them or see them around the place.”
Mr Robert said he was not sure why the club was so successful.
“It does help the crows are not too far away from here, but then again Melbourne is the same distance,” Mr Robert said.
“I think next year we will be stronger and better just like the football team.”
Mr Robert said he was excited for the season to begin, saying the team’s new coach and a “heap of new bloods” would provide the club with a fresh start.
“We will have a new coach and a fresh start with a heap of new bloods which will be getting a go,” he said.
“Last year, we had Darcy Fogarty down as our special guest for the annual function and he only got a few mentions at the end of the year.
“There has been a bit of a shift and I think he will get a red hot go.”
In his eighth year of being president, Mr Robert said the not-for-profit group tried to organise as many events as possible during 2019, including a progressive dinner and a family day.
Mr Robert said the group’s annual general meeting was approaching on November 25 and invited any interested community members to attend.
“We are like a lot of groups and we have an aging committee, so it would be great to see some new members,” he said.
“I feel like volunteering as we know it has just about finished.
“Younger people have sport and jobs and it is hard to get people in here to volunteer their time.”
The annual general meeting will be held at 9 Cedar Street from 7pm.
