A UNITED Nations sanctioned day which aims to break down barriers and recognise millions of people living with a disability will be celebrated in the South East next month.
The International Day of People with Disability will be held in Mount Gambier, with the region’s service providers coming together to empower and celebrate people with disabilities at an awards ceremony on December 3.
Minda Limestone Coast acting support leader Hayley Burzacott said the day aimed at increasing disability awareness.
“We are striving to break down barriers for the 4.3 million Australians living with disability while positively contributing change to the community,” Ms Burzacott said.
“It is all about inclusion, accessibility and celebrating people who have a disability and recognising their achievements.
“Most of the time, recognition often goes towards the workers in this industry so it is great to focus on those living with disability.”
Ms Burzacott said awards will be presented to people nominated to for their outstanding achievements.
“The awards will be presented to somebody who lives with a disability and has contributed to the community in the past 12 months,” she said.
Working in the industry for the past two years, Ms Burzacott said her job was rewarding.
“I first started in the industry because I like building connections with people and helping people achieve their goals,” she said.
“It is an interest of mine and I have enjoyed it so far.
“I have met many interesting and diverse people and get to work with them everyday.”
Ms Burzacott said there was a growing demand for support workers in the region.
“I have definitely seen the industry grow over the two years I have been involved,” she said.
“You would see a lot of jobs being advertised in this sector.
“I would love to see people step up and become involved.”
The International Day of People with Disability event will be held at the Main Corner Complex and Cave Gardens from 11am to 1pm.
A range of activities including a jumping castle, wildlife show, face painting, food and drinks will be available.
