PENOLA and Coonawarra residents flocked to the Penola War Memorial Park on Monday to mark 101 years since the end of of World War I.

Residents paid their respects at the memorial as Vietnam veteran Neville Vixon conducted the annual commemorative service.

Penola students attended the event where representatives from each school laid
wreaths.

Penola High School student Ebonie Moulton also presented a poem paying tribute to the men and women who have fallen in the line of duty.

Wreaths were laid by the Penola Coonawarra Returned Services League, schools, the Penola Lions Club and the Penola Police Station.

“This year’s event was greatly attended by the members of the local community,” Mr Vixon said.

“On Remembrance Day we remember those who have fallen from all wars, whether that be the First World War or even the Boer War right through to Afghanistan.

“It is a day to reflect and remember and allow people to heal.”

“The community does support these ceremonies very well and we are very grateful,” he
said.
